TRAIL DES TRANCHÉES
Today the Trail des Tranchées race has become a well-known regional, national and international event. More than 300 runners will start, on a unique way to discover Verdun and its Battlefield, with 65 miles of circuits through forests, around shell holes and along city streets.
The Greater Verdun Tourist Office has designed special trails with historical and nature routes through the heart of the forest and across the Verdun Battlefield, sites classified as a “Natura 2000” area and an “Exceptional Forest”.
The circuits pass close by the major 1914-1918 historical sites (the Forts of Douaumont, Vaux and Souville, the Ouvrages of Froidterre and Thiaumont, the 4 Chimneys Troop Shelter, the Verdun Underground Citadel), and include exceptionally, access to the Upper Citadel, which is not normally open to public visits.
On each of the 3 circuits, of 14.8km, 32.5km and 55.8km, the Trailers will start from Douaumont in the heart of the Battlefield, seen off by a detachment of “Poilus”, who will form a guard of honour with their bayonets as the Trailers finish their runs on the Pré l’Evêque in the city centre.
3 circuits have been created for children, over 1km, 2.7km and 3.7km distances, to allow them to discover the fun of running, and where they can share in the general good mood of the event.
